Preview of the Kronos Quartet’s concert on 3 December 1991 at the Orpheum in Graz (clipping from the family archive; preview, exact day not documented). Under the strapline „Sensationsgastspiel“ [“sensational guest performance”], Bernd Schmidt announces that gamsbART will present Pepl’s “New Work” with the San Francisco quartet, alongside works by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, Michael Daugherty, Terry Riley and Louis Andriessen, all of them commissioned by the quartet. He introduces Pepl as head of the jazz guitar class at today’s University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, recalls Le Monde’s description of him as a “giant of improvisation” and explains Instant Composing, which uses the computer to combine fixed compositional lines with improvisation; with a sentence by Pepl on his musical aesthetic.
