The Altenberg Trio Wien made its debut in January 1994 at the Mozart Week in Salzburg, Austria, and is trio in residence of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, with its own annual series in the Brahms Hall of the Musikverein, home of the Vienna Philharmonic.1 On Saturday, 19 October 1996, at the 13th Jugendmusikfest Deutschlandsberg (Styria, Austria), part of the steirischer herbst festival of contemporary art, it gave the premiere of Pepl's “Exzentrik Egometrik” in the Laßnitzhaus, ballet music for piano, violin, cello and tape with texts by the Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard; a repeat performance followed on Sunday, 20 October.2 From 1994 to 2004 the trio played with Claus-Christian Schuster (piano), Amiram Ganz (violin) and Martin Hornstein (cello).3 The archive of the steirischer herbst lists the evening as “ballett theater” with the Altenberg Trio and choreography by Christian Martinu, but names only Ernst Widmer and Mauricio Kagel as composers.4
