ORF Big Band
The orchestra of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation
Orchestra of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF, Austria's public broadcaster), which existed from 1971 to 1981. In the 1970s Pepl was the band's guitarist and soloist until he ended his contract in 1977.
Harry Pepl Guitarist and soloist
According to Kohler, the big band emerged from the Fehring Orchestra and was under the administrative direction of Erich Kleinschuster, the Austrian jazz trombonist; conductors included Ernst Kugler, Karel Krautgartner and Richard Österreicher. In 1977 Pepl terminated his contract with the band in order to play only jazz from then on.1 A contemporary printed page from the estate that lists Pepl in the line-up adds: alongside the founder Erich Kleinschuster, Johannes Fehring, Karel Krautgartner and Ernst Kugler looked after productions and public recordings of the band as leaders, and Slide Hampton, Arthur Greenslade and Ernie Wilkins worked as guest conductors. The recordings with him were made up to 1977, some of them released only later.
