Harry Pepl's home-studio recordings in the light of jazz and music research
For twenty seconds only the bass plays. Then drums and guitar come in, the music grows denser and louder, reaches its climax after just under two minutes, and at the end bass and guitar drop out and leave the close to the drums. That is how “Git Trio 3” by the Lonely Single Swinger Band sounds: like a jazz band improvising in the same moment. Yet it was played by a single musician, Harry Pepl, in his basement studio in Hernstein, Austria, one track at a time. How can that be? A search for clues in jazz history, studio technique and the science of listening, with a measurement of the sound curves made for this archive.
