In 1994 Harry Pepl played one of his last concert series with an international line-up: the French double bassist Hélène Labarrière, the New York drummer Gene Jackson and Wolfgang Mitterer on synthesizer. Among other places, the group performed in Kyiv (Ukraine), probably in Slovakia, in Graz, there with Wolfgang Puschnig on saxophone, and at Porgy & Bess (Vienna jazz club) in Vienna. No recording has survived in the family archive. Of the Graz concert at the Graz Meeting “Strings” on Wednesday, 20 April 1994, at the Orpheum, a concert venue in Graz, however, the Österreichische Mediathek (Austrian Mediathek), Austria’s archive of sound and video recordings at the Technisches Museum Wien, holds an unreleased recording and the broadcast “Aus dem Konzertsaal: Graz Meeting 1994” by Ö1, ORF’s cultural radio station, featuring the Harry Pepl Quartet, both on cassette and available only on site; the catalogue does not name the other musicians that evening.1 After that there were no more concerts of his own; in December 1997 Pepl joined in once more at the INNtöne festival weekend (today a jazz festival in Diersbach, Upper Austria) at Zell an der Pram Castle, in changing line-ups, mainly on piano and drums.2
In 1994 Porgy & Bess, which had opened in 1993, gave Pepl a three-day solo series; on one of the evenings he played with Mitterer.3 Mitterer's own chronology also names Gene Jackson for Porgy & Bess and the trombonist Paul Zauner for Kyiv.4 As early as July 1994 the Kronen Zeitung, Austria’s largest-circulation daily, had listed a quartet with Puschnig, Labarrière and Jackson among Pepl's projects.5
