Harry Pepl on Benny Goodman

Somehow I played like Charlie Christian’s grandfather, so even older.

Self-ironic, on the 1980 concerts with Benny Goodman, the “King of Swing”: for the swing repertoire he deliberately played through a small amplifier without reverb, while at the time he was otherwise making very modern music of his own with heavy reverb, delay and effects. Charlie Christian was Goodman’s guitarist around 1940 and a pioneer of the electric jazz guitar

Harry Pepl On the concert with Benny Goodman; conversation with Nikolaus Kohler (Interview 2-14), quoted in Kohler 2006, p. 61

So I didn't know a single tune, and Benny didn't give us a programme or anything.

Benny had such a radiance, really, in his phrasing and in everything, it was absolutely brilliant
