Georg Pepl
Harry Pepl's son, editor of the scores of his Real-time Compositions, including “Zeitraffer”.
Circle · Son
Harry Pepl's elder son. He holds a doctorate in musicology from the University of Vienna, lives in Germany and works there as a music journalist and critic. As editor he made his father's computer-recorded Real-time Compositions playable: the notation generated via MIDI, in the smallest note values, was at first no usable score; Georg Pepl edited it, distributed the voices and added performance instructions, as in the string quartet “Über Kurz oder Lang, Von der Weite und der Enge” for the Artis Quartet (1993). According to Heckel he had a decisive share in the creation of this work. He wrote the work commentary in the programme for the premiere at the Vienna Musikverein, home of the Vienna Philharmonic, and the liner notes of the piano album “Flow” (1996). From the early 1990s he was in effect his father's editor for the music engraving; for STUDIO PERCUSSION graz he notated “Anspannen, Überspannen, Abspannen” and the score of “Zeitraffer” (premiered 2000), notated entirely by hand.
Voices
While playing the piano Harry Pepl enjoys being able to elevate himself to the mood of the moment, or to plunge into a different sense of being. The notes are independent, streaming out all by themselves, as silent water or as a flow.
Just looking at the titles of his pieces one recognises that Pepl is a deeply musical and romantic artist. Musically his playing is related to language itself, he has listened to its rhythms and double meanings.
The improvising pianist flows out into the world of tones, the piano player melts into oneness with the piano, desists in his identity as a subjective entity.
